UK to USA Checklist
Important checks for all businesses shipping to the U.S.
When shipping goods from the UK to the US, accuracy and compliance are critical to avoid delays, penalties, or unexpected costs at customs. This checklist highlights the key requirements every exporter should cover:
1. Goods description
- Provide a clear, detailed description (not just “clothing” but “100% cotton men’s T-shirts, pack of 5”).
2. HS Codes
- Use the correct Harmonised System (HS) Code for accurate duty calculation.
3. Incoterms
- Ensure the Incoterm reflects who is responsible for duties/taxes (e.g. DDP vs DAP).
4. Manufacturer Identification Code (MID)
- Mandatory for all imports, ensure accuracy.
5. Valuation
- Declare the true transaction value of the goods, including freight and insurance where applicable.
6. Paperwork Accuracy
- Double-check commercial invoices and airwaybills.
- Ensure sender and consignee details are complete and match.
7. Supporting Documents (if required)
- Certificates of origin, FDA or EPA documentation, licenses for restricted goods.
